Sir Paul McCartney brought his Up and Coming Tour to Glasgow’s Hampden Stadium, his first performance in the City for 20 years and despite rumours of poor ticket sales, the stadium seemed pretty packed with Beatles and Wings fans alike. Paul had two days prior celebrated his 68th Birthday and looked fantastic for it.
Writing about anything Beatle-related presents a problem, what to say that hasn’t already been said? Not to mention that every writer has an opinion about Paul McCartney or the Fab Four. Everyone from your Gran to your dog knows a Beatles song and we all know how they sound and should be arranged, there is generally no surprises, however it comes down to what it is and that is the songs are legendary! McCartney/Lennon is the greatest writing combination in musical history, fact.
The set is an astounding sight for all in Glasgow as you would expect from this level of rock royalty. Opening with ‘Venus and Mars’ and moving straight into ‘Jet’ are a ready and eager starter! Then the crowd’s first taste of the Beatles comes from ‘All My loving’ ‘which is backed with McCartney’s excellent band, which is minimalist in size but produced an exceedingly good sound.
McCartney’s energy is fantastic, he is still the very together performer you’d expect and sails through the set with great ease. Unlike some of his peers such as Brian Wilson who struggle through their sets these days. He’s a natural of course, but he has been doing it for 50 years. ‘Drive My Car’ is still superb and fits in nicely with his set which is heavily soaked with Wings and Solo songs. ‘Let Me Roll it’ and ‘1985’ are instant crowd pleasers with a thundering response from Glasgow. ‘Dance Tonight’ is classic McCartney the tune stays in your head for hours after and it’s another gem from the many that he has written post Lennon days.
The big guns come out as the set wavers and it’s truly a memorable last hour with ‘Let it Be’ bringing a lump to the throat and ‘Hey Jude’ being sung with gusto by the delighted audience. Paying his respects to his now deceased band mates Lennon and Harrison he pays a fitting tribute buy performing ‘A Day in the Life’ merged with ‘Give Peace a Chance’ and similarly playing on Ukulele ‘Something’. Montages of Lennon and Harrison are respectfully played in the big screens.
As he looks to close his magnificent show ‘Live and Let Die’ is an amazing spectacle of fireworks and explosions, in true James Bond style. Nothing could compare to this at all! With two generous encores McCartney never looks tired, as he says ‘We couldn’t play here without playing this one’ he brings on a local pipe band for the ultimate sing-along that is’ Mull of Kintyre’. ‘Helter Skelter’ kicks ass and will go down as my definite highlight of the evening, and a rare opportunity to hear an original version! McCartney closes very aptly with ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band/The End’ it’s been almost three hours and it felt like 30 minutes, McCartney looks like he could go again and Glasgow would love him too!
The show was inspirational, and one of the best performers anyone could ever see! Everyone is left with sore hands and sore throats from applauding and singing their hearts out! Sir Paul McCartney has written songs that people will be singing for generations to come. And he can still deliver them in a way that can make your heart skip and beat and fill you with awe for his magnificent performance. What a privilege to spend a night in his company!
