Artist: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Single: Say No To Love
Label: Fortuna Pop

Released: 5th July
Reviewed By: Nicole Tiernan

the-pains-of-being-pure-at-heartThe Pains of Being Pure at Heart are no strangers to the music industry with their debut album reaching no.15 in NME’s Top 50 Albums of 2009 last year and now they’re back with their new single ‘Say No To Love’ which is out on July 5th on Fortuna Pop.
With summer finally hitting the UK and the sun finally making an appearance I’m sure you’re looking for that track to get you into that summer mood right? Well look no further as The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have that covered! This indie pop track ticks all the boxes to making this a definite summer hit this year, with a feel good backing track filled with pleasant acoustics that compliments lead vocalist Kip’s soft vocals perfectly.

‘Say No To Love’ also comes with B side ‘Lost Saint’ which is a little less warm compared to first track but nevertheless it is filled with Kip’s brilliant hushed vocals against light yet strong acoustics with a mixture of electric as well as percussion instruments.
Overall this two track single is the perfect mood setting music for those summer day chill outs or even peaceful summer nights with friends and if this is an insight to what The Pains of Being Pure at Heart s second album is going to sound like than it’s going to be brilliant.

Review: Sir Paul McCartney at Hampden Stadium, Glasgow

Posted by GetToTheFront On June - 24 - 2010

What: Sir Paul McCartney
Where: Hampden Stadium, Glasgow
When: 20th june 2010

Reviewed by: Lynsey Ure

mccartney11Sir Paul McCartney brought his Up and Coming Tour to Glasgow’s Hampden Stadium, his first performance in the City for 20 years and despite rumours of poor ticket sales, the stadium seemed pretty packed with Beatles and Wings fans alike. Paul had two days prior celebrated his 68th Birthday and looked fantastic for it.

Writing about anything Beatle-related presents a problem, what to say that hasn’t already been said? Not to mention that every writer has an opinion about Paul McCartney or the Fab Four. Everyone from your Gran to your dog knows a Beatles song and we all know how they sound and should be arranged, there is generally no surprises, however it comes down to what it is and that is the songs are legendary! McCartney/Lennon is the greatest writing combination in musical history, fact.

The set is an astounding sight for all in Glasgow as you would expect from this level of rock royalty. Opening with ‘Venus and Mars’ and moving straight into ‘Jet’ are a ready and eager starter! Then the crowd’s first taste of the Beatles comes from ‘All My loving’ ‘which is backed with McCartney’s excellent band, which is minimalist in size but produced an exceedingly good sound.
McCartney’s energy is fantastic, he is still the very together performer you’d expect and sails through the set with great ease. Unlike some of his peers such as Brian Wilson who struggle through their sets these days. He’s a natural of course, but he has been doing it for 50 years. ‘Drive My Car’ is still superb and fits in nicely with his set which is heavily soaked with Wings and Solo songs. ‘Let Me Roll it’ and ‘1985’ are instant crowd pleasers with a thundering response from Glasgow. ‘Dance Tonight’ is classic McCartney the tune stays in your head for hours after and it’s another gem from the many that he has written post Lennon days.

The big guns come out as the set wavers and it’s truly a memorable last hour with ‘Let it Be’ bringing a lump to the throat and ‘Hey Jude’ being sung with gusto by the delighted audience. Paying his respects to his now deceased band mates Lennon and Harrison he pays a fitting tribute buy performing ‘A Day in the Life’ merged with ‘Give Peace a Chance’ and similarly playing on Ukulele ‘Something’. Montages of Lennon and Harrison are respectfully played in the big screens.

As he looks to close his magnificent show ‘Live and Let Die’ is an amazing spectacle of fireworks and explosions, in true James Bond style. Nothing could compare to this at all! With two generous encores McCartney never looks tired, as he says ‘We couldn’t play here without playing this one’ he brings on a local pipe band for the ultimate sing-along that is’ Mull of Kintyre’. ‘Helter Skelter’ kicks ass and will go down as my definite highlight of the evening, and a rare opportunity to hear an original version! McCartney closes very aptly with ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band/The End’ it’s been almost three hours and it felt like 30 minutes, McCartney looks like he could go again and Glasgow would love him too!

The show was inspirational, and one of the best performers anyone could ever see! Everyone is left with sore hands and sore throats from applauding and singing their hearts out! Sir Paul McCartney has written songs that people will be singing for generations to come. And he can still deliver them in a way that can make your heart skip and beat and fill you with awe for his magnificent performance. What a privilege to spend a night in his company!

Review: Bon Jovi at O2 Arena, London

Posted by GetToTheFront On June - 24 - 2010

What: Bon Jovi
Where: O2 Arena, London
When: 22nd June 2010

Reviewed by: Roger Goodgroves

bon_jovi_070There was much excitement when Bon Jovi announced a series of twelve nights in June at the O2 arena. Whilst initial ticket sales were brisk, once again the over-priced “top” tickets stuck on the later dates. There were many 2 for 1 offers in the last few weeks and then on Tuesday I ended up getting two tickets for free! Now I’m a gig fanatic and would normally pay good money for this sort of entertainment, however give me it to me for free and I’m a pig in poo.

That is not to under-value the show that Bon Jovi put on, there were many here tonight that paid top whack for their seats and certainly would have gone home happy. It is clear from watching Jon and the band that they still love to play live. During this residency at the O2 they change the set list every night. Jon Bon Jovi made a point of mentioning last night that they had played over 50 different songs so far before going on to introduce one of their rarer tracks called “Garageland”. It hasn’t appeared on their albums, well not the conventional ones, however it did make their “100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong” box set in 2004.

Bon Jovi are another band who can put together a set-list to keep all elements of their fans happy. A good mix of albums were dotted about the set, I made it selections from Ten different albums. Add to that the myriad of top hits played such as “You give love a bad name”, Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There For You” and Bon Jovi kept the crowd on their feet the whole night.

Tonight’s stage was an interesting one, a complete circle with a smaller circle inside that forming the main stage. The remainder of the larger circle was filled with standing fans in the pit. This was one of the rare concerts at the O2 where the seats at the side and rear of the stage are used. Bon Jovi weren’t really playing “in the round” and only occasionally faced and played to those behind. Added to that, hanging above the stage were a series of large screens that either worked independently or together at various stages helping set the mood for the track being played, from sunsets on “Wanted, dead or alive” to a mass of images on “Living on a prayer”. From the front these worked really well, unfortunately from behind occasionally these screens would have hidden the band from the audience. The one good thing about the screens was that they were double sided. Not much cancellation when you’ve paid £75+ for a seat.

This was a night of pure, unadulterated 80s soft rock, blond perms in abundance. Bon Jovi are masters of it. Jon certainly was on top form playing the band leader. He wouldn’t be happy until everyone was on their feet and joining in. His beaming, ultra white smile was a beacon that drew the eyes of the crowd. If they fell under his spell they would have missed a great set of musicians in the band who helped put on such a good show. Best known of those is guitarist Richie Sambora, however you also have multi Tony award winning keyboard player David Bryan. I’d have expected the audience tonight to be 40 somethings reliving the songs that made up their youth, however I was amazed at the cross section of ages. There were young and old from a perhaps eight year old to my left, to an eighty year old to my right. What was also evident was that they weren’t just here as casual listeners, they were fans. Bon Jovi have certainly got the formulae right and will appeal to many.

The band play the last two remaining dates of their residency at the O2 this coming weekend, the secondary ticket agency viagogo have some tickets at very reduced prices. If you haven’t already got yours then I would strongly recommend checking out Bon Jovi. Even if you only have a mild interest in their music I guarantee that you’ll know more songs than you thought and you’ll be singing one or two of them on the tube on the way home.

Review: Hot club De Paris at Roadmender Northampton

Posted by GetToTheFront On June - 24 - 2010

What: Hot club De Paris
Where: Roadmender Northampton
When: 18th June 2010

Reviewed by: Leighanne Sykes

hotclubdeparis1I’m here at the intimate venue of The Roadmender in Northampton where a small crowd has gathered as Hot Club De Paris took to the stage. Hot Club De Paris had the small crowd hooked from the offset and it was clear that the crowd were made up of dye hard fans. From as early in the set as two songs in they began yelling requests. One fan yelled for “Shipwreck” one of Hot Club De Paris classic tracks which was coincidently going to be the next song on the set list anyway, so they were more than happy to oblige.

“Shipwreck” was a definite highlight of the show and had the fans jumping and singing along from start to finish. The track set the tempo for the rest of the night by pumping up the crowd and giving them an awesome vibe that Hot Club De Paris are known for.

As soon as “Shipwreck“ finished another fan proceeded to shout out a request in which the drummer Alasdair Smith jokingly replied “let us finish what we have prepared and when we have finished you can request any that we have missed” The cheeky scourers had good crowd interaction and banter throughout the show addressing every fan that shouted out.

The set included many of their classic tracks to add to the new material that has been showcased on mini EPs released throughout the year.

If you haven’t heard Hot Club de Paris before and looking to compare their sound to someone else I would say they sound a little like Little Comets but hopefully they will not follow in their footsteps as they have recently just been dropped.

Hot Club de Paris have a very punk-rock ethic and the trio write and produce all of their own material. They have an experimental edge and lyrical intent within their songs however with their more recent offerings, being more upbeat and seemingly more musically driven, it indicates a slight shift in direction from the band.
