GetToTheFront: ‘Take Me There’ is your lastest single and there’s a Facebook campaign to get you into the UK Top 40 with it; how does that feel to know that over 1,000 fans have joined in your support?
Ignition: The campaign was originally set up by mates out of curiosity, just to see how far it could go.There was no big mastermind promotion behind it or anything like that.People just got access to the link through our own facebook’s and word quickly spread. It reached over a thousand in the first four weeks, so it was a good feeling to know that we had that much support and that there was a certain kind of hype going around for the single release.
GetToTheFront: Is getting into the mainstream chart something that bothers you?
Ignition: It’s not the be all and end all for us, but yea of course we are a band that are striving for top uk chart positions. We don’t want to be a small underground band with a small dedicated fanbase. Some bands are happy with that, but we wouldn’t be.That’s not what we’re about and the music would’nt be classified as underground anyway. We know the songs are good enough to stand up to anything else out there, especially now in todays music climate.
GetToTheFront: The single itself has been hovering about on Youtube for a few years, will a lot of the songs on the upcoming “Silver Sun” already be familar to your fans?
Ignition: It wasn’t a single a few years ago.It was just another song that was written and happened to be recorded by a mate and then uploaded onto the net for a few of our sites. It was recorded rough acousticly and at the time we had no management no label or no investment.
Most of the other tracks for debut album “silver sun” weren’t written at the time, so the only way the others are familiar to fans at the minute is through live gigs, samples on our sites and air play. The properly produced album version of of “Take Me There” isn’t available to anyone until release, and the video for it was only uploaded onto our sites a few months ago.
GetToTheFront: You recorded the album at some very prestigious studios (Abbey Road , Olympic and RAK studios). Did you feel honoured or did you treat them like any other recording studio?
Ignition: We obviously felt honoured at the start of each experience as they are the studios in which all our idols recorded and each have their own iconic history to them. Coming from a small town like Armagh in N.ireland, and recording at Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles recorded, was a dream come true for all of us.Though when you remember what money is being spent each day for you to record in studios like that, you have to keep your feet on the ground and block all that out and treat it like any other recording studio.
GetToTheFront: You cite Oasis as your biggest inspiration but do you have any influences closer to your home in County Armagh, Northern Ireland?
Ignition: There’s no music scene whatsoever in Armagh and never really was.Even when we were younger there wasn’t that many bands about except the odd cover bands,so you’d to head far out of town to see decent bands and even they weren’t that great.Armagh never had the facilities to cater for live rock bands either, so it was hard for bands to get started and to create a scene and for us then to be influeneced by anyone around town. There was only one pub in Armagh called “The Northern Bar” run by a keene music lover called Desie Hughes that made a huge effort getting local bands in to play. That pub is were it all started out for us thanks to him.
GetToTheFront: You formed way back in 2001, did you ever set yourself a time limit for making it or giving up?
Ignition: We did’nt set ourselves any limits when we first started out in 2001. We were all still in school, so it was just a bunch of best mates hanging out jamming together and enjoying it. We were playing local gigs and holding our own nights selling demos etc, so we were making really good money and didn’t pay much heed to were we were going at the time. It was just somthing to do, as small towns like Armagh can get very boring as there’s shit all else to do.
It was only when we started selling a good few thousand demos on down the line, and were spotted by our manager that we started to think that we could really do somthing with it.
Back then we would’nt have had the songs that we have now, and we are obviously older and more experienced now, so nows the right time to take things to the next level.
GetToTheFront: Your first demo was called “Cuz There Is F**k All Else”, is that your reason for keeping making music?
Ignition: Our mate joe came up with that title for the demo, and it summed us up quite well at the time.
It’s not our reason for making music at all, it’s just what we thought of the music scene at the time and still do even more so today. There’s only a few bands out there that we respect and would have alot of time for, other than that, the industry is just drenched in this new faze of under power pop music.Everything sounds the same, and even alot of the bands you hear out now seem to have came from the same factory conveyer belt.No ones saying anything anymore, and every song you hear seems to be about love or someone losing their girlfriend. Not everyone though wants to hear that, but it’s being shoved in their faces.Thats why i cant wait till we’re properly on the scene leading up to our single release, cos we’re gonna change all that.
GetToTheFront: Considering you’ve built up most of your fanbase via live peformances, your upcoming gigging calendar is looking pretty bare; is it going to stay that way for much longer?
Ignition: We’ve only recently finished off recording our album, which took about a good year in the making, and had been rehearsing and writing alot in the meantime for it. We done quite a few mini tours across the UK and Ireland and done a small radio tour before we got down to work, so we wanted to take a break from all that to concentrate on the album in order to make it as good as we knew it could be.Now with the album finished and the debut single ready to be launched into the UK music scene on 7th june a tour is currently being organised as we speak for the summer, and we’ve a few big festival slots coming up.
