GetToTheFront: How would you describe Afraid of Fear’s sound?
Afraid of Fear: It’s a mixture of Electro, Ambient and Pop, blended carefully with catchy hooks and melodic vocals. - Served extra hot on a bed of electrifying kick drums and epic snares, with a generous helping of synthesizers on the side that will never fail to get you on your feet and moving.
GetToTheFront: What’s the story behind the name Afraid of Fear?
Afraid of Fear: I used to be one of those people that always thought of the worst possible outcome in situations. This was until I realized that if you think positive, you will gain strength and hit an issue head on with the fix in sight. Naturally - If you think of the worst, then you will expect the worst to happen and worry yourself to death
‘Afraid of Fear’ best described to me this feeling. It also relates to me in the manner of thinking too much. Which then serves the question ‘Can you really be afraid, if there’s nothing to fear in the first place?’
ANYWAY! Enough of all the seriousness! It’s a play on words and it sounded cool!
GetToTheFront: You’re debut single, ‘The Cut Down’ will be released in May digitally through iTunes, can you give us 3 words to describe the single?
Afraid of Fear:
1. Have
2. A
3. Listen?
GetToTheFront: Did you write ‘The Cut Down’ about someone in particular and if you did, does that person know it’s about them?
Afraid of Fear: ‘The Cut Down’ is my phrase for turning someone down. Not necessarily in the context of a relationship, but also in the scenario of a two faced friend. We’ve all been there haven’t we?!. It’s great writing songs.. They never have to know!!
It’s about that girl we ALL know that loves attention and seeks it from everywhere. She’s sort of addicted to tragedy. And this is my way of saying I can see her true colours.
GetToTheFront: You produce and write all your own songs. When writing a song, where do you draw your inspirations from?
Afraid of Fear: Italian dance and pop music! Life experiences so far.. My friends and my family most definitely!
This changes a lot! – Some days I can wake up in the morning humming a melody and I think ‘I need to record this!’ and a few hours later its transformed into a full song.
GetToTheFront: On your Myspace you have uploaded your version of Lady Gaga’s song ‘Poker Face’, what made you decide to cover that particular song?
Afraid of Fear: I remember being bored at home one day and just thinking to myself that I would really like to have a go at playing this song in my own style. I love Lady GaGa’s vocal melodies and chord progressions.
I actually started and finished it all from scratch in about 2 hours, recording it as I went along. Put it up on MySpace and seeing as it was so well received.. I kept it up there since!
GetToTheFront: You have been compared to the likes of Owl City, Little Boots and Basshunter. How do you feel about these comparisons?
Afraid of Fear: I’m honestly flattered. Obviously I aim for originality but to be compared to such huge artists like that, it really is humbling.
GetToTheFront: When will we get to hear stuff from the album?
Afraid of Fear: I’m not entirely sure when exactly the album will drop! I’d imagine in the next few months for sure, as I am just finishing vocals on about 3 more of the tracks. Until then I will be adding new songs from the album onto my Myspace page for you to listen to! I’m also going to start a video blog on my facebook page where I will perform some tracks from the album acoustically.
GetToTheFront: Do you have a name for the new album?
Afraid of Fear: I do! Initially it was ‘The fine line between Beauty and Despair’ (Which was actually the title of an old acoustic song of mine!) – However I have shortened it now to ‘The Fine Line’
GetToTheFront: If you could record a duet with anyone, who would you choose?
Afraid of Fear: Probably Rihanna! I love the dynamics in her voice!
If Rihanna is busy on the day.. Then I would call up Lady GaGa.
(On my dream phone obviously)
GetToTheFront: What song’s are currently playing on Afraid of Fear’s iPod?
Afraid of Fear: Lady GaGa – Speechless! On repeat!! And my friend’s band from Italy called ‘Airway’ It’s their new album ‘Respira’
GetToTheFront: Finally, what else can we expect from you in 2010?
Afraid of Fear: I plan to play as many shows everywhere I possibly can to as many people that I can to promote the single and album release.
I would really like to work with someone in scripting another music video too!
And perhaps another tour!
