Review: MiMi Soya, I Can’t Stand Pop Bands EP

Posted by GetToTheFront On May - 28 - 2010

Artist: MiMi Soya
Album EP: I Can’t Stand Pop Bands
Label: LAB Records

Released: 14th June 2010

mimi_soya_coverAny pop-punk band that’s fronted by a red-headed female is instantly going to be inundated with comparisons to Paramore, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing if the music offered stands as strong. However MiMi Soya have something different, and that’s that they’re from the other side of the Atlantic. Following on from the apparent revival of UK pop rock, this Brighton-based four piece are here to set the scene alight.

The four-track EP opens up with Millionaire, a song which combines catchy guitar hooks and vocal acrobatics showing the range of lead-singer Jorga’s voice.

The song is followed by ‘I Told You So’ which shows Jorga is not the only one in the band who can sing, as this track includes dual vocals. Just like all the other tracks on this release, it offers healthy competition to their predecessors.

Moving on to the title track, “I Can’t Stand Pop Bands” is a contagious song that starts slow then builds up to a chorus filled with punchy beats and lyrics to match - “Regardless of what you say, we’re gonna do it anyway.” The determination in their lyrics shines through in the music too, and if there is any justice with songs like these it won’t be long before they ‘make it’.
The mini-album ends with “Doctor! Doctor!”, another serving of contagious, anthemic pop-punk complete with chanting chorus to match.

The entire EP may only play out just over 10 minutes, but this small taster of what MiMi Soya can offer is enough to whet your appetite. If you’re a fan of the genre this a must-have.

Review: Chris T-T, The Tunnels, Bristol

What: Chris T-T
Where: The Tunnels, Bristol
When: 21st May 2010

chritThis was my first visit to The Tunnels, and I have to say I was impressed with the venue. With its modern bar and setting it was cool despite the heat of the day, and with its own beer garden it is pure heaven on a sunny day. Due to the venue’s setup of two separate tunnels joined by a staircase, it’s a great environment for live music, giving the music a brilliant sound quality, with such an intimate feel.

Before Chris took to the stage I was slightly nervous, having only listened to a few of his songs, and hearing many comparisons to Frank Turner I was worried he wouldn’t stand-out from the many singer-songwriters that are around these days, however what Chris produced was a truly magically experience.

Taking to the stage just after 8.30, Chris T-T opened his 10 song set with his cleverly written view of the world, “The Shape We Are In” off his album “The 253”, followed by “Old Man”. The crowd started off small however as Chris played through his set the room suddenly became packed with people being drawn to the sound of his amazing voice as it filled the tunnel.

My personal favourite of the gig, had to be “Love is Not a Rescue” the title track of his most recent album. The lyrics are truly beautiful, and the song seems very personal as if he was bearing his soul for us to see.

Chris T-T’s lyrics are something to rave about, as they induce laughter, sadness and even hatred in the audience. With the “Hedgehog Song” bringing a tear to my eye, although you’ll be pleased to know it does have a happy ending, well, for the Hedgehog at least.

With his witty, meaningful lyrics Chris T-T is really something special, he has certainly gained a new fan in me.

Interview: Sean Kingston

Posted by GetToTheFront On May - 24 - 2010

sean1GetToTheFront: Hello, how are you, where are you today, to make us all a little bit jealous?

SK: Um I have been just below Cleveland you know to relax, spending a little time with the family and right now I’m in Miami, Florida

GetToTheFront: So let’s talk about your new single ‘Eenie Meenie’. I think having you and Justin Bieber on the same track is every young girls dream… Whose idea was it to team up and do a track together?

SK: Well you know me and Justin have been friends for years and have a real close relationship like before the song even came about and basically the label had just said about recording together and we did you know and it was great we recorded like 4 or 5 songs and this song ‘Eenie Meenie’ that was the special one.

GetToTheFront: You’re doing a big tour in the USA with Justin Bieber, how do you think this tour will differ from your tours with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson?

SK: Because it’s like me and him brother to brother it is kinda like just me and him. Because the other tours was like touring with other people it got crazy but on this tour is going to be just me and just him really intimate and really personal It is going to be really nice I am really looking forward to it. It’s young it’s a young tour. Justin is fifteen and then I am 20 so it is going to be a young tour.

GetToTheFront: Do you think you will be bringing the tour to the UK?

SK: Um I think we are actually working with somebody now so definitely

GetToTheFront: If you were invisible for the day what would be the first thing you would do?

SK: The first thing I would do is, um, go to the mall man go to the mall, shopping

GetToTheFront: Just like normal things that are like harder to do these days

SK: Exactly go to the bowling alley and the movies.

GetToTheFront: If we said that you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what song would you pick and why?

SK: Bob Marley – No Woman No Cry

GetToTheFront: Do you have a favorite saying, that you use all the time? You know like forest Gump and life is like a box of chocolates you never know what you’re gonna get!

SK: Time is Money [Which incidentally is the name of Sean’s own record label]

GetToTheFront: With the song Fire Burning you worked with Red One who is a massive commodity at the minute, will you be working with him in the future?

Afraid of Fear: Definitely I think we will be working together again for some new stuff. That guy is like amazing

GetToTheFront: And you did a duet with Natasha Bedingfield a while ago, she is a British Artist. Is there any other British Artist you would like to work with in the future?

SK: Um, let’s see I would like to work with Leona Lewis. Leona Lewis is good.

GetToTheFront: Finally, what else have you got planned for this year?

SK: I am coming out with a clothing line and I am coming up with a third album it’s going to be crazy stuff Its going to be a lot of electrical songs on there a lot of up-tempo songs there will be some reggae in there.
