Interview: LIGHTS!

Posted by GetToTheFront On March - 10 - 2010

lights_mainGetToTheFront: Can you give us 5 words to sum up your UK tour with Owl City?

LIGHTS: Woah, lot’s of people. Awesome!

GetToTheFront: During your live performances you have covered some amazing songs, did you cover any songs during your UK tour with Owl City?

LIGHTS: On this tour I’ve kept it to nothing but tracks from ‘The Listening’. I want people to learn as much about me and my tunes as they can in 40 minutes.

GetToTheFront: ‘The listening’ is your debut studio album, do you have a UK release date?

LIGHTS: There is no specific release date yet, but it will be in May.

GetToTheFront: You’re a talented songwriter and this shows through the songs you wrote for your debut album. When writing a song do you prefer co-writing a song and being able to engage another insight, or do you feel its easier penning the song alone?

LIGHTS: I love to write alone, but there is definitely something extra to be found in co-writing with someone that understands me and my thoughts. Sometimes I can be indulgent in music and it’s great to have a writing partner that will keep the non-sensical ideas in check.

GetToTheFront: Is there any song by an artist that you wished you could have written?

LIGHTS: A few songs I wish I’d written are “Don’t Dream it’s Over” by Crowded House, “Boys of Summer” by Don Henley, “Am I Wry - No” by Mew, “Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell, “Joga” by Bjork, and “You Are Mine” by Mutemath.

GetToTheFront: You’re not just a talented writer you are also a talented musician. Is their any musician that you would love to get in the studio and create a song with?

LIGHTS: I get lots of compliments today, this rules. Thank you! I would love to get in the studio with Dead Maus, Michael Buble, or Shad–three awesome Canadian music makers that contrast my music quite a bit, which I like.

GetToTheFront: When reading your description of yourself and your music on your MySpace page, with regards to your debut album you said ‘I called this first full collection of music, “The Listening.” I hope that it makes you feel special too..’ Is their any album you have listened to and have felt it made you feel special?

LIGHTS: One of my favourite records is “And the Glass Handed Kites” by Mew. I guess you could say that one made me feel special. One of my all time favourite records is “King of Fools” by Delirious. That’s a special record.

GetToTheFront: What songs are currently playing on LIGHTS ipod?

LIGHTS: Right now it’s a lot of Chromeo, M83, Friendly Fires, Empire of the Sun, POS, Hatebreed, Cradle of Filth, and Aesop Rock. I like a good mixed bag.

GetToTheFront: If we said to you, you can only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what song would you pick and why?

LIGHTS: I would honestly have to turn down the offer and opt for nothing. No matter how good a song is, I would learn to hate it if it was my only option. Music is there to serve you in your different moods, no one song can work for all of them. I would be fine without a song, I’d just invent them in my head and no one would be the wiser.

GetToTheFront: Finally, apart from your tour with Owl City, what else have you got in store for 2010?

LIGHTS: As it stands we’ve got some one off shows scheduled in March, including some stuff at SXSW in Texas, then some Lilith Fair dates in the summer. Also May will mark my UK/European record release and my return there. See you then?
