GetToTheFront: Your album ‘Bomb in a Birdcage’ will be released on March 1st here in the UK; can you give us 5 words to describe the album?
A Fine Frenzy: Dynamic, emotional, exuberant, broken and beautiful.
GTTF: Why did you decide to call the album ‘Bomb in a Birdcage’?
AFF: I think I had begun to feel really restricted… there were a lot of factors, the greatest of which was my own fear, but it was really starting to get to me. I sat down to write this album, and I found this strange feeling welling up inside of me. It was a powerful, rebellious fire in the pit of my stomach that I simply couldn’t ignore. I felt like I was going to explode. It was a strange time. I feel like these songs helped me through one of the most confusing and tumultuous periods of my life. Bomb in a Birdcage is a line from the first song on the album (which happens to also be the first song I wrote for the album, What I Wouldn’t Do). The line is, “With my heart ticking like a bomb in a birdcage, I left before someone got hurt.” That pretty much summed up this album for me.
GTTF: Can we expect to see you touring in the UK anytime soon?
AFF: I certainly hope so! Not sure exactly what our plans are, but I know we are working on it. As soon as we know, I’ll be tweeting/myspacing about it like mad J
GTTF: During your live performances you have covered some amazing songs, such as; Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’ and The White Stripes ‘Seven Nation Army’. Are there any other songs you would love to cover in your live performances?
AFF: Such great songs, aren’t they? Cover songs are funny. We never really know what we’re going to do until we do them. There are so many incredible songs out there, it’s just a matter of finding ones that we feel we can do without completely ruining them J
GTTF: You are a talented songwriter, when writing a song do you prefer co-writing a song and being able to engage another insight, or do you feel its easier penning the song alone?
AFF: It really depends. I used to almost exclusively write songs on my own, but now I have found some people that I have a lot of writing chemistry with (writing is very intimate, it’s quite like dating… if there’s no chemistry, it can be just plain awful, but if there is chemistry… fireworks!), so I like co-writing very much. Certain songs will come to me in one piece, others need someone else to complete them.
GTTF: Is their any song by an artist that you wished you could have written?
AFF: There are so many! First Day of my Life (Bright Eyes), Shelter from the Storm, Positively 4th Street, Idiot Wind (Bob Dylan), The Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel), New Slang (The Shins), Empty (Ray Lamontagne), What a Wonderful World, Naked as We Came (Iron & Wine)… too many…
GTTF: It seems you have a finger in every pie; you have been involved in fashion, acting and now you are writing your first novel, what one of these would you say you prefer doing?
AFF: In my heart of hearts, I’m a story-teller. Writing, both in song and prose, is my favorite thing in the world, and I am never quite as happy doing anything else. However, I really just love being creative, and so whatever happens to feel right in the moment is what I’ll do.
GTTF: Finally, apart from your album release what else have you got in store for 2010?
AFF: I’m going to be busy! I wrote a book called “Three Sails and the Family Moss”, a young adult fantasy/adventure along the lines of The Chronicles of Narnia/Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which hopefully (fingers crossed) will be out this year, and I’m working on a few different musical projects, which may or may not be out this year as well (which I’m very excited about!)… We’re coming to Europe to do a little tour in March, which will be fun, and we’ll be playing the Lilith Fair this summer, which will be incredible! The rest of the time, I think I’m just going to be writing and working like a mad little mouse. 2011 will be a very very busy year, I believe. 2010 is going to be a bit quieter, unless everything moves at light speed… we shall see! It’s all an adventure!
