A sold out Rock City in Nottingham can only mean good times, and after hearing only good things about ‘Manchester Orchestra’ from both sides of the Atlantic for a while, I finally got the chance to see the band live whilst they were supporting Biffy Clyro. The band themselves are a 5 piece rock band from Atlanta that effortlessly blend the styles of grunge with experimental with a sprinkle of pop, image if Nirvana played songs written by Kings of Leon.
The first thing to notice about all the bands this evening is the amount of hair that is on show, not only in the form on mop tops, but also the beard form. M.O stroll onto the stage an immediately get down to business, this continues throughout the short set, with only little crowd interaction, which can be put down to tight time and the band wanting to get on with the playing.
This is the only downside to the bands set is the fact they only get to play 5 songs, the crowd were certainly mesmerised, in particular the opening song and new single ‘I’ve got friends’ which is certainly one of the best songs on the new album. The next track ‘Shake It Out’ certainly keeps the crowd’s attention with the vocal quality’s of Andy Hull, from the melodic verse to the aggressive chorus that ripped through every member of the crowd’s spine.
The band now decided to slow things down a little with ‘Pride’, again from the new album, the ending to the song is the most powerful of the night and brings the loudest response from the crowd. To finish the final 2 songs on the album are played out which sounds like a 10 minute epic track. The Biffy Clyro faithful crowd were certainly left wanting more, which can only be a good thing.
Make sure you check out channel 4’s ‘Live at Abbey Road’ where the band will be featured on December 5th.
