‘Folk Songs’ is an album by James Yorkston & The Big Eyes Family Players. James Yorkston is a Scottish musician highly regarded in the world of folk music.
This review is of a promotional CD containing 2 tracks from said album.
Folk music has always had its ups and downs, but still remains popular to this day. James Yorkston, for this album, has chosen 11 of his favourite folk songs and, along with superbly named musicians ‘The Big Eyes Family Players’, done his own versions.
‘Martinmas Time’ is a very simple song but quickly becomes quite catchy. Pleasantly sang and performed, its one of those songs you will probably be humming all day.
I’m not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. The original is by Anne Briggs.
‘I went to visit the roses’ is one of Mr Yorkstons own songs, and again is a simple, ear pleasing number which doesnt exactly break any musical boundries, but plods along nicely and is easy on the ears.
