Interview: Ou Est Le Swimming Pool

Posted by GetToTheFront On August - 30 - 2009

ouestleswimmingpoolGettothefront: Firstly, many people are intrigued as to why you chose the name ‘Ou Est Le Swimming Pool’, could you tell us the reasoning behind this?

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool: It all started with us wanting to join the Eurovision Song Contest. We had no songs, no name, but we did own an acoustic guitar and an accordion. Those instruments combined with some wine and terrible French brought us to the epic name that is Ou Est Le Swimming Pool.

GTTF: Can you tell us a bit about your new single ‘Dance the way I feel’?

OELSP: Sure thing. It’s basically just a track to get everyone and anyone dancing. No matter who you are, you hopefully can forget all your troubles and do whatever you like. We’ve also had some great producers working on it, Trevor Horn and Anders Kallmark, so it’s sounding better than ever recently.

GTTF: You have done the festival circuit this year, how did you find it?

OELSP: This summer has been pretty amazing for us. We’ve been really lucky to get on as many festivals as we have done considering this is Pool Year 1, so we’ve made the most of all of them. Obviously Glastonbury was incredible, but also some of the smaller ones have been great. In fact small festival so much fun…

GTTF: Did you get to catch any bands while being at the festivals?

OELSP: We’ve seen so many bands this summer. I never ever thought I’d get to see Spinal Tap live so that was beyond incredible. They’ve still got it! But there were loads of great bands. The Horrors, Dan Black, Steel Pulse, Q Tip, Animal Collective, Crosby Stills and Nash. The list goes on and on.

GTTF: We have seen that you will be doing a few University fresher’s week gigs, are you nervous about performing to a bunch of students? As we have heard what the University crowds are like and they are hard to please.

OELSP: We weren’t worried until now. I’d always assumed that they would be reasonably easy to please. Surely everyone’s in a great mood in fresher’s week? Well, we shall have to see. We’re all looking forward to the gigs so hopefully everyone’s looking forward to seeing us play. We’ll definitely show them a good time.

GTTF: What has been the worst gig you have done so far?

OELSP: Well we don’t really want to name names, but we did have an exceptionally bad time in Glasgow. I think the fact that it took us 12 hours didn’t put us in the best of moods. But we definitely only spent about an hour there. I’m sure it will be better next time though. We’ve been pretty lucky apart from that.

GTTF: You all have an interesting and unique fashion style, do you stouestleswimmingpool_coveryle yourselves and where do you get your inspirations from?

OELSP: We usually just dress and style ourselves how we want to. We constantly get bored of looking the same for too long so we always find ourselves trying something new. But a lot more thought goes in to photo shoots and gigs. We get kitted out in some choice stuff by some great designers and then just beg to keep the stuff.

GTTF: If you had a chance to collaborate with anyone artist (past or present), who would it be and why?

OELSP: Screamin’ Jay Hawkins would be damn cool. Mainly because he’s bat shit insane, but also you’ve got to have respect for anyone who actually has a song called Constipation Blues. He spends the whole track making horrendous noises. Genius. So either him or Steps.

GTTF: What would you be doing if you weren’t in the band?

OELSP: I reckon we’d be a vigilante crime fighting force. Showing criminals that crime has consequences. Or we’d be bums…

GTTF: What new music would you like to recommend to Get to the Front readers?

OELSP: There is loads out there. Kid Cola, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, Ellie Goulding, Dan Black, Japayork and Armand Van Helden and A-Trak’s collaboration “Duck Sauce” is definitely worth a listen.

GTTF: What would be in Ou Est Le Swimming Pools rider?

OELSP: We do like to pride ourselves on our rider. We are yet to get any of the cool stuff, but one day…

We’ve got Gary Coleman impersonators, life size Tom Hanks cut outs, inspirational videos of Kerry Katona embarrassing herself and obviously lots of champagne. The list is epicly long though so we’ll leave it at that.

GTTF: Can you give Get to the Front readers a unique fact about the band?

OELSP: We actually wrote the Thunderbirds theme tune.

GTTF: Finally, what is next for Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, for the rest of this year?

OELSP: We’ll, as you said earlier, we’re off on a fresher’s tour. Then we should be off on a big support tour before the end of the year, but I can’t say who that is yet. Apart from that, it’s just releasing a couple of singles, filming a video for our Christmas mega hit. Hopefully we’ll get to do some work with some other artists or get some remixes done.

Review: Tommy Reilly - ‘Words on the Floor’ Album Sampler

Artist: Tommy Reilly
Album: Words on the Floor (Sampler)
Label: Polydor

Released: 21st September

Tommy Reilly - Words on the FloorTommy Reilly from just outside Glasgow was “discovered” after entering TV talent show Orange unsigned because he learned that his mates had entered.

After releasing a couple of singles including Gimme a Call which reached Number 14 in the UK chart, and then Jackets which hit number one in Scotland, he has built up a strong following north of the border. Tommy has a full UK tour to look forward to in Sept and October to promote his new album Words on the Floor released on 21st September. The highlight of the tour should be a triumphant homecoming gig at the ABC on Sauchiehall Street on the 25th September.

On the back of this 4 track preview to the album, it promises to be a cracker. Great new songs include Kick the Covers and the title track Words on the Floor highlight Tommy’s unusual and unique vocal style. Like a Scottish version of Conor Oberst meets Josh Rouse circa Nashville which is no bad thing at all. Words on the Floor is Tommy’s most ambitious track yet, adding piano and handclaps to his usual acoustic guitar and vocals, it really does mark him out as one to watch and well worth catching in the UK this autumn.

Review: Katy Perry - Live @ Birmingham Academy

What: Katy Perry

katy1Katy Perry has amazing stage presence which a rebelliousness cheeky charm and charisma, to say her show was high energy would be a major understatement.

Katy is known for being a fashionista, Dressed in a red and black poke a dot dress with a union jack middle, Katy didn’t disappoint and this sure rubs of on her fans with many mini Katy Perry dressed audience members (very adorable).
Katy’s staging was along the theme of her album with giant inflatable Cherry Chapstick, a Flamingo and of course a Strawberry that she later threw into the crowd to be passed around.

Katy dances and jumps around the stage like a women possessed and it’s clear to see that she puts her all into the performances and seems to enjoy every second, despite the many bruises one presumes she must receive from all the crowd diving and full on performances that she gives showing she truly is ‘One of the boys’.

You would think that due to the performance she gives, vocally she may suffer however this is not the case as she gave a solid vocal performance throughout and even played a little acoustic guitar for ‘Thinking of You’.

katy_liveKaty dived into the crowd for both ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and when she sung Queens ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ causing an almighty shift in the crowd as they descended upon her in a crazed frenzy, although this did not seem to phase Katy at all if anything spurred her on further. For ‘Hot and Cold’ Katy chose two very eager 16-year-old boys to dance with her on stage, which made for an amusing performance as they rocked out together and ending by trashing a guitar, which she then gave the boys to keep, much to their delight.

Katy covered a few classic tracks as well as her own pop-punk rock tunes including The Marvelettes ‘Please Mr Postman’ followed by The Foundations ‘Build Me Up Buttercup which then led into Queens ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, all of which were well received by the crowd who were singing and jumping along throughout.

Katy finished with her anthem track ‘I Kissed a Girl’ in which as previously mentioned she jumps down to the crowd and proceeds to actually kiss a girl and almost gets dragged into the very hot, lively and loud crowd.

Review: Sliimy - Live @ Birmingham Academy

What: Sliimy

sliimyMany people were asking at the show ‘Who is Sliimy’, but it is clear to say everyone went away with the answer that he is the next best thing.

When we first heard Sliimy was the support act for Katy Perry we decided to google him, it was apparent by many reviewers he was tipped as being a new Mika, however from witnessing Sliimy live this evening it is clear to say Sliimy is definitely an artist who has something new to offer, not just in style but with his sound also.

Accompanied with an acoustic guitarist, Sliimy came on stage with an enthusiastic vibe and went straight into his first song of the evening. The first thing that struck us when Sliimy came on was his quirky and unique outfit, with such a unique outfit you would think Sliimy would be highly confident but when preceding to introduce himself to the crowd after his first song, it became clear he was a very softly spoken shy guy. However it was interesting to see that his shyness was not affected in his performance one little bit.

With Sliimy being the support act it is clear to say numerous ‘Katy Cats’ would not know his songs or lyrics, however this did not put a damper on Sliimy’s performance as he urged the crowd to participate along with him, and the audience were happy to participate.

Sliimy finished his set with his latest single ‘Wake Up’, which had the crowd singing along to the catchy chorus. I don’t think the acoustic guitar did the song any justice as the acoustic version fails to incorporate the catchy melody in the original version.

Sliimy left a lot of people surprised, his songs are a lot like himself, quirky, funny but yet very soulful, and raw at the same time.

A definite one to watch!

Review: Andrew Bird - Live @ HMV Picture House

Posted by GetToTheFront On August - 27 - 2009

What: Andrew Bird with support Emma Pollock
Where: The Edge festival, HMV PICTURE HOUSE

When: 23rd August
Reviewed by: Lynsey Ure

andrew_birdIn a poll of whistling, glockenspiel/guitar/violin-playing singers, Andrew Bird would undoubtedly come top, though competition is few and far between. His gig tonight is one of the many that Edinburgh’s Edge Festival has put on throughout the month of August, to co-inside with the infamous Fringe Festival.

Support comes from Emma Pollock, who really gets the crowd going with her energetic set filled with mainly new material. Short but sweet the crowd are happy with her performance but are eager for Bird to take to the stage, and when he does he is meet by immense cheering and applauding showing appreciation from the start.

As he flies effortlessly through his set, it’s clear that no song comes without a story holding more mystery to this magnificent character. Each track has wonderful looping and pedal use allowing him to have no need to be supported by a backing band. Bird’s extraordinary talent was most obvious on ‘A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left’, on which he mixed virtuoso violin playing, looped with rattling rock guitar, which really allows him to move away from his classical routes, topped off with that now infamous whistling!

His latest album ‘Noble Beast’ plays heavily on the set list with tracks including tracks ‘Natural Disaster’, ‘Effigy’ and ‘Fits and Dizzyspells’ being automatic crowd pleasers. Returning to the stage for his encore Bird is clearly overwhelmed by his response as he honors a ladies request for him to play Dr Strings and then closing with the delightful ‘Weather Systems’.
Andrew Bird sits on a high pedestal with his fans and tonight the pedestal was well and truly deserved, with a fantastic performance from start to finish the atmosphere was certainly buzzing with excitement as a happy crowd pilled out The Picture House.

Review: Clumberfest Live

Posted by GetToTheFront On August - 26 - 2009

What: Clumberfest
Where: Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire

When: 22nd August
Reviewed by: Darren Singleton

clumber_smallClumberfest 2009 was a 1 day mini-festival, featuring Supergrass, The Lightning Seeds and Super Furry Animals.

Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire is a perfect location for an event such as this, an open space surrounded by woods, farmland and a huge lake. The weather was sunny, the mood was good, and the queue for the beer stall was ridiculous. I imagine some people will still be in it this time next week.

The first act to come on were Supergrass, dare I say the finest band ever to come out of Oxford. Supergrass have the advantage of having some real crowd pleasing hits in their back catalogue, all of which were played during this set. Sun Hits the Sky, Richard III and Moving ensured the crowd were kept happy and, in some cases, dancing. The set closed with 1994 debut single Caught by the Fuzz. Its hard to imagine anyone coming away disappointed such a polished and hit-laden set.

As the darkness fell, the crowd started abandoning the mats on which they had earlier lay in the sun on and squashed to the front of the stage. One thing didn’t change though - the queue for the beer stall.

Next on were veteran Liverpool band The Lightning Seeds. I have to confess I had thought this band had split up a few years ago, but here they were, with lead singer Ian Broudie looking exactly the same as he did 10 years ago.
After the first few songs, I was surprised at how understated and mellow the band sounded, the pulsing keyboard beats replaced by a soft guitar sound.

It seemed to work on most songs, but hits like Pure just didnt sound right slowed down slightly. However, I came away impressed by the set, I had forgotten just how many truly fantastic songs the Lightning Seeds had recorded. Songs like Sense, Life of Riley and Lucky You reminded us why this band are held in such high esteem.

So it was onto the headline act next, Cardiff’s finest - Super Furry Animals. This is a band I have seen many times before, and knew to expect a certain degree of craziness. If the band appeared on stage beamed down from a spaceship I wouldnt have even raised an eyebrow.

As it happens, they didn’t. The band arrived on stage sporting beards which would put most tramps to shame, and lead singer Gruff Rhys was armed with cue cards instructing the crowd to shout ‘woah’ or applaud whenever they were held up - as if they needed any encouragment.

The Super Furries never disappoint live - and they certainly didn’t on this occasion. The set comprised of hits, classics, and a few songs from new album Dark Days/Light Years was lapped up by the crowd, most of which who sang every word. It was obvious who the bulk of the people had come to see.

A cynic would probably argue that most of the band appeared..how can I put this…’out of it’ - but then again if I saw the Super Furry Animals perform a gig completely sober then it would surely be the weirdest one yet.

All in all a great day, 3 impressive sets, fantastic weather, and did I mention a very long beer queue?
