Tributes have been paid to disco star Donna Summer, who has died aged 63.

It is believed the American singer, best known for hits including I Feel Love and Love To Love You Baby, had been fighting cancer.

A family statement said: “Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith. While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time.”

Summer’s publicist Brian Edwards said the family wanted donations to be made in her honour to the Salvation Army in lieu of flowers.

Summer, who was born LaDonna Gaines in Boston, learned to sing in church before fronting a series of bands and appearing in musicals. Working as a session singer brought her into contact with producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte and together they established her as one of the biggest acts of the 1970s.

The extended 16-minute version of Love To Love You Baby was a huge hit in the clubs, but was banned from several radio stations because of her suggestive vocal style. The 1976 hit made her a star and she found even greater success in 1977 with I Feel Love, which again featured the hypnotic electronic disco beats of the pioneering Moroder.

Producer Quincy Jones paid tribute on Twitter, writing: “Rest in Peace dear Donna Summer. Your voice was the heartbeat and soundtrack of a decade.” Kylie Minogue described her as “one of my earliest musical inspirations”.

Record producer Pete Waterman, who worked with Summer in the 1980s, said his abiding memory was of “a lovely person”. He said: “Whenever you were with her she made you feel so special. She had all the talent but she gave you all the credit. She was not a diva in any shape or form.”

The singer teamed up with Stock Aitken Waterman in the late 1980s when she had alienated many fans with alleged anti-gay remarks. Waterman said: “She was in the wilderness when we had the biggest record of our careers together.

“They warned us against working with her because of the whole anti-gay thing that had happened. But what a voice she had. She used to warm up in the ladies toilet and everyone in our building would stop and it would come to a standstill to hear her warm up.”

A tearful Adele was named songwriter of the year at the Ivor Novello Awards – and promptly gave the gong away.

Presented with the award by Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox, Adele said she learned from the reviews of her first album.

She said: “The main thing was, my songs weren’t as good as my voice, which I hadn’t realised but I took it on board and now I’m songwriter of the year.”

She dedicated the award to her manager Jonathan Dickins and said: “This award is going on your shelf, not mine.”

The Grammy Award-winning singer also picked up the award for most performed work for her song Rolling In The Deep at the central London ceremony and joked she never expected it to be a hit.

She said: “I really didn’t think it was going to do anything anywhere.”

There were also awards for Take That who were honoured for their outstanding contribution to British music, and Lana Del Rey, who won best contemporary song for Video Games. The annual awards are highly prized because they are voted for by songwriters and composers.

Speaking backstage at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Gary Barlow said the award was the one “that really matters”. He added: “We go to a lot of award shows but if you were to see the pleasure on the recipients’ faces when they get an Ivor, it’s just something different and special and its a beautiful award show and I’m proud to be here and proud to win one.”

Ed Sheeran won the award for best song musically and lyrically for The A Team, and PJ Harvey’s Mercury Prize-winning Let England Shake was named best album.

Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp was presented with the award for outstanding song collection, while Siouxsie Sioux picked up the Ivors Inspiration award.

Paris Hilton is gearing up to make her debut as a professional DJ.

The hotel heiress – who previously attempted a pop career when she released her self-titled album in 2006 – will perform a one-hour set at the Pop Music Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, next month, reports E! Online.

The 31-year-old, who is also working on a second album, said: “Electronic music is a huge passion of mine and I’m finally letting the world experience it with me. I have been working in the studio for a long time and I’m ready to take deejaying to the next level.”

A police spokesman said the permit for her June 3 Born This Way Ball concert – the biggest show on her Asian tour – had been denied.

Hard-liners in the country have criticised Lady Gaga, saying the suggestive nature of her show threatened to undermine the country’s moral fibre. Some threatened to use physical force to prevent her from stepping off the plane.

The local promoter, Michael Rusli, could not immediately be reached for comment. Earlier, he told The Associated Press it would be “regrettable” if police didn’t give the clearance.

Adam Lambert reckons his new album Trespassing will raise eyebrows among his fans.

The former American Idol winner, 30, is set to release his second record, on which he collaborated with the likes of Bruno Mars, Pharrell Williams and Dr Luke.

Glam rocker Adam – who co-wrote many of the songs on the album, due out in July – revealed: “I had time to make this album. I do feel that sonically, lyrically and emotionally, this album is a surprise for people – and myself.”

Adam’s previous record, For Your Entertainment, debuted at number three on the US Billboard charts in 2009, the year he finished as runner-up on Idol.

He said of TV talent shows such as Idol, The Voice and X Factor: “I think that it’s great that there are shows out there giving people that platform. It’s really difficult to make it in the music industry.

“These shows are great because they show what the person is capable of and their journey and process of becoming an artist… I think the difficult thing is the transition between TV competition series and going into the actual music industry. There still seems to be a slight disconnect there. Hopefully, they’re fixing that.”

And Adam admitted coming back to real life after the American Idol hype died down was “a bit of a shock”.

“You kind of have to decompress, and I had some failed romantic situations, and I was a bit tired and worn out, so at the beginning of the writing process, there was some darkness I was working through, which was great,” he added.

“It was real. It was visceral. Then, I got in my relationship, I started relaxing and having more time to myself with my friends and wanting to go out again – shopping, rediscovering culture and life.”

Rihanna has returned to the stage just a week after she was rushed to hospital reportedly suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.

The Rude Boy singer – who tweeted a picture of her arm with an IV drip attached on May 9 after attending New York’s Met gala – performed at the Robin Hood Foundation benefit in the Big Apple dressed as an Egyptian princess.

Rihanna appeared on stage at the poverty-fighting event on a huge leopard-print throne and dressed in a gold bandeau top and chiffon trousers split to the thigh, with dramatic eye make-up and a jewelled headpiece. She entertained with her hits Only Girl (In The World), Run This Town and Live Your Life.

The star tweeted afterwards: “I performed at one of the most incredible events last night, Robin Hood.

“Besides it being the most major set and costume design everrrrr, we helped raise almost 58 million dollars for people in need!”

And Rihanna hinted to her UK fans that she will be returning in the not too distant future. She wrote: “I’m missin the UK a bit, but I’ll be back wit y’all very soon.”

Mani’s wife has proclaimed that The Stone Roses bass player is a modern-day Nostradamus after he apparently predicted Manchester City’s league win at the weekend.

Years ago devoted Manchester United fan Mani predicted that The Stone Roses would only reform once Man City had experienced major success.

Next month the band start a series of huge reunion shows and Mani’s wife Imelda Mounfield quickly took to Twitter after City won the league on Saturday to point out how conveniently these events match up.

“City’s win is all down to Mani, he predicted yrs ago the stone roses would play again after city won the league !!!! Nostradamus or what ..” she tweeted.

While Mani might not be best pleased that he helped his team’s arch rivals other Manchester musicians have been celebrating City’s 3-2 win against QPR on Sunday, which won them the league.

As Liam Gallagher swigged champagne, and teased United manager Sir Alex Ferguson via twitter, in a private box at the game, his brother Noel said he watched the match at a bar in Chile, and cried.
